That’s why we’ve put together this step-by-step guide on how to play Geforce Now on Nvidia Shield. Understanding this guide can get you one step closer to that perfect gaming experience you’ve been dreaming of!
Understanding How Nvidia Shield Games Run Using Geforce Now
The first step to playing your Geforce Now on Nvidia Shield is understanding your software. Knowing this, let’s take the time to answer two basic questions:
- What is Geforce Now?
- ..and how does Geforce Now work with Nvidia Shield TV?
The answers are simple. Unlike traditional gaming services that require you download games to your PC, the Geforce Now gives you a cloud option. This means that you can play games without taking up extra space on your hardware.
The catch? Geforce Now works solely through the Nvidia Shield, a high-graphics television service that gives you interactive access to your favorite games and streaming apps. The Nvidia Shield works through Android and markets itself as a do-it-all media playing service.
With Geforce Now, you are able to stream games from your Steam library directly to your Nvidia Shield. Watch your games come to life with intense graphics and crazy high resolution!
Understanding this, let’s take a look at how you can begin playing your Geforce Now games on your Nvidia Shield.

Geforce Now Pricing
Mystery surrounds the future of Geforce Now pricing.
As of now, Nvidia has yet to make an official announcement over the future pricing structure of its program.
Google trackers are lurking on 75% of websites. Cover your tracks to protect yourself.
Geforce Now, which is currently in beta, may be subject to a variety of different pricing schemes upon official debut.
How to Get Geforce Now (without waiting!)
- To sign up for the Geforce Now Wait List, click here.
- Or if you don’t feel like waiting, then go to Gamivo to buy a Geforce Now key!
The bad news is that the rumored prices for the service radically differ in affordability. The service, which is currently free during beta, may become unaffordable for casual gamers if Nvidia chooses to implement some of these rumored pricing structures.
One of the most common—and popular among gamers—is a flat fee charged for each month of gaming. In this way, Geforce Now may operate as a Netflix of gaming of sorts, with a monthly fee of around $8 to $10. This option remains popular as an affordable means of allowing gamers of nearly all income levels to access the service.
Other proposals, however, prove a bit more complex. Under these models, it’s rumored that Geforce Now will have a price of $25 for every twenty hours of games played. This could easily lead to charges of $75 a month for gamers who play at least two hours a day.
As of now, both pricing structures remain rumors.
The good news is that those looking to take advantage of Geforce Now currently can for free.

1. Make Sure You Have a Good Internet Connection
It may sound like common sense, but you won’t get far without a good Internet connection. Because Geforce Now is wireless-based, you won’t be able to use it without stable Internet access.
Specifically, your Geforce Now games are all stored in your Geforce Now cloud, accessible through Steam. Without a stable connection, you won’t be able to enter Steam or load any of the games that are stored in your cloud
2. Make a Free Steam Account
Geforce Now is available through Steam integration. This means that you won’t be able to play Geforce Now games on your Nvidia Shield without a Steam account.
If you’re new to Steam, don’t worry—accounts are 100% free. Simply download the system and make your free account. Even if you don’t plan on much PC gaming, make sure you keep your login information in mind or on hand, as you’ll need it to play your Geforce Now games.
If you already have an existing Steam account, you can use it to access your Geforce Now games. Simply integrate the two systems, and you will be able to find your Geforce Now library through your Steam account.
3. Go to Nvidia Games
Once you are into your Steam account, head to the Nvidia Games category available on your dashboard. This will show you the games that are available to play on your Nvidia Shield. Unless you have another gaming service compatible with your Nvidia Shield, these should largely be Geforce Now games.
Keep in mind that this is a separate category of games that work through your Nvidia Shield. Even if you have these games available for PC on your Steam account, you will be able to play them from your high-graphics Nvidia Shield if you follow through these steps.
4. Go to Settings and Login
Once you’ve accessed your Nvidia Games account from steam, you will be prompted to login.
This login code is one that you should have made when setting up your Shield TV. If you haven’t yet setup your Nvidia Shield account, you will need to do this first.
This account can be setup online by using your phone or your PC.
Once this account is setup, you must login to receive access to your Nvidia Games account. To do this, you must access the “settings and login” option under Nvidia Games.
You can do this by scrolling to the bottom of the page after clicking the “Nvidia Games” option under your Steam account. Here, you’ll find a “settings” option. Click it.
Here, you’ll reach a login screen.
The login stage here is rather complex, and you’ll need to be sure that you have your Nvidia account set up.
To login, you will be prompted to enter a verification code. This code can be accessed over the phone or the computer by entering your Nvidia account. Here, you’ll find the code that you need to login.
Enter this code into your Nvidia Shield TV. Once you do, you’ll gain access to your Nvidia account.
5. Go to Your Library
Once you gain access into your account, you’re ready to start accessing the different games that Nvidia has to offer.
There are several viewing options once you’re in the account. Most gamers tend to access their gaming library upon login.
To do this, you’ll need to find the “Geforce Now,” option and press enter. It’s important that you do this to access games that are saved to your Geforce Now cloud. There may be other games in your Steam library that aren’t under your Geforce Now folder. Don’t worry—you can still play them, but this requires different steps, so we’ll go more in-depth about this later.
For now, you’re going to want to access your Geforce Now library by clicking on the icon. This will load your personal Geforce Now library.
Once here, you’ll notice a few different options, so let’s take a moment to break them down. Depending on the type of game you want to play, it’s important that you understand the Geforce Now interface.
Because of the different options available, it’s not quite as simple as selecting a game you want to play. You’ll also have to know where to find it.
The good news is that if you already have a game downloaded on Steam, it will be available to you free of charge under your Geforce now account.
You’ll also have the option to browse through popular titles. For these, extra steps must be taken.
6. Click the Game of Your Choice
Now you should see an entire dashboard of games that are available to play through Geforce Now. Keep in mind that many of these games are not already installed. This means that you will have to manually install certain games available in your Geforce Now cloud.
Once the game has been installed, simply login to your Geforce Now account with your Steam information and play the game. Depending on the strength of your connection and the size of your game, loading times for your game may vary.
When you are in, however, you should be able to stream your game directly to your Nvidia Shield device. This will give you access to high-quality games that aren’t junking up space on your PC. By playing your games through Geforce Now, you can have access to all the hottest titles without worrying about game size or computer storag
7. For Steam Games Not on Your Geforce Now Cloud
This sounds simple enough, but how do you add games to your Geforce Now cloud if they’re not already there?
Don’t worry—it’s not as complicated as you may think. If you go out to your Steam dashboard, you will easily be able to tell which games are in your cloud already. Follow this simple pattern to know which games need to be installed on your Geforce Now cloud: games included in your cloud will have a check mark symbol, and games you need to download to your cloud will have an arrow down symbol.
If a game is not already on your cloud, you need to install it. When you do so, you may receive a notification saying that you’ll have to reinstall the game every time you play. This will occur when the game you are attempting to install is not supported by Geforce Now. If you see this option, keep in mind that your game’s save data will not be stored.
8. Enjoy Access to New Games Under the Steam Store
One of the best features about the Nvidia Shield is that it now allows for a wide variety of gaming options.
When the service first launched, gamers found themselves stuck with dated gaming options.
This has been something that Nvidia has worked to rectify with a large selection of trending new games.
When accessing the Steam store, gamers now find both current and classic games. Even better, this selection includes both free-to-play and pay-to-play options—making it great for those on a budget.
Currently, gamers have the ability to sort the Steam store based on a number of pricing categories—from free games and demos to games under five or ten dollars.
Of course, full-price trending titles remain a popular option as well.
Keep in mind that, as noted, if you’ve already downloaded a game to your Steam account, it should be available under your Geforce Now library. If not, it’s likely that the game isn’t currently supported by Geforce Now. It’s in this area that Geforce Now currently has the most limited features, but as the service continues to grow, it’s likely that this will change.
Also, remember to save your games to your Geforce Now library if you wish to save progress and continue playing. Because the service is cloud-based, you’ll be able to save your game’s progress across a variety of platforms.
Even better, currently, those playing on the Nvidia Shield TV can play with others using the same service for the PC. Unfortunately, this extended functionality doesn’t apply to Xbox and PlayStation console players.
Those wishing to play with others can do so by sharing their Steam account information. By acquiring one’s username, you can find and play with them through a variety of popular multiplayer titles.
The Bottom Line
Nvidia Shield TV’s current Geforce Now gaming beta offers powerful cloud-based gaming functionality. By integrating this service with your Steam account, you can start playing some of today’s hottest titles right from your TV.
By following the guide above, you can quickly setup and access your Geforce Now account for hours of endless gaming.
