FanDome 2021: All The Major DC Movie Updates and Previews

The DC FanDome 2021 event offered a series of updates, previews, and trailers for many upcoming DC Comics films. The first DC FanDome event in 2020 was born out of necessity.

DC Comics and Warner Bros. wanted to release all the teaser material they had prepared but could not release through the usual venues COVID-19 pandemic that caused all the problems. All the major fan fairs, such as San Diego ComicCon, would be closed or delayed.

This led to creating a virtual space called FanDome and a digital flagship event dedicated to DC Comics that proved so successful that they decided to make it an annual event.

Most fans at DC FanDome are waiting for the movie trailers the most, but the event demonstrates far more than just the new movies. DC FanDome covers the entirety of the fandom experience, featuring announcements on all media based on the DC Comics multiverse.

This includes video games, comic books, graphic novels, animated and live-action TV series.

Despite this, images and previews of the DCEU movies remain the most significant draw that DC FanDome has to attract the population. The first DC FanDome event in 2020 set a gold standard for virtual events that will be hard to match for the event in its sophomore outing.

On the other hand, few anticipated that the first DC FanDome would be a huge success, and there is no reason to believe that the 2021 FanDome event will not match or surpass the original.

The following summary should offer even the most discerning DC Comics fans a welcome taste of chills, thrills, cheers, and hope, all hallmarks associated with DC Comics.

Black Adam

The first teaser trailer for Black Adam reportedly focused on the first scene Dwayne Johnson filmed for the movie. Coincidentally, it’s also Black Adam’s first scene in the film, centered on the ancient anti-hero making an electrifying appearance.

The trailer also offered the first look at the film’s versions of Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo), Dr. Fate (Pierce Brosnan), and Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell). Black Adam is scheduled to hit theaters next summer on July 29, 2022.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

Aquaman fans, unfortunately, were not shown any exclusive footage from the sequel. Instead, the Aquaman 2 teaser trailer consisted of concept art and behind-the-scenes stunt clips. Jason Momoa promised that the new movie would be “a fun adventure, like the first time, but better.”

At the same time, director James Wan revealed that fans could expect a “more mature” and sophisticated story than a standard superhero movie. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is scheduled for release in cinemas worldwide on December 16, 2022.

A Static Shock Movie From Milestone Comics

Rumors of a live-action film based on the Milestone Comics character Static (best known for his animated series Static Shock) have been swirling around Hollywood for years.

On DC FanDome’s Milestone Comics segment, its co-founder Denys Cowan and producer Reggie Hudlin confirmed that Michael B. Jordan was producing a Static movie with joint forces of his own company, Outlier Society, and Warner Bros. Pictures.

The script is being written by Big Army writer Randy McKinnon, who is also the screenwriter of the upcoming reboot of The Lost Boys.

New Batman Film Updates

The first trailer for The Batman was released during DC FanDome 2020. It immediately captivated Bat fans worldwide, offering them their first glimpse of Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight Detective.

The second trailer for The Batman was even more revealing, presenting the film’s first look at The Riddler (Paul Dano), Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), The Penguin (Colin Farrell), and Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis).

The trailer contains a series of comic book-related Easter eggs for viewers to consider while they wait and think: “I will eventually do my essay on them on Reddit.” The Batman movie’s announced release date is on March 04, 2022.

The Flash

The first teaser trailer for The Flash confirmed rumors that the film’s story appears to be loosely based on the comic book storyline called Flashpoint, with The Fastest Man Alive damaging the timeline after trying to change his own past.

A brief clip shows Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) working alongside an alternate universe version of himself. The clip also confirms the presence of at least one version of Batman, though which Batman it might be is kept in the dark.

As with The Batman trailer, there are several Flash Easter Eggs for excited fans to spill.

While the upcoming Batgirl movie is still in pre-production, DC FanDome 2021 featured an interview with Christina Hodson (screenwriter), Leslie Grace (Barbara Gordon), and directors Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi.

The brief segment showed some of the concept art for the series, which confirmed that Batgirl’s costume will have a full hood and that Barbara’s signature red hair will be present. Grace also talked about her physical training for the role and how refreshing it was to “play a female superhero who has guts.”

No release date has been confirmed for the movie, but it is expected to launch on HBO Max sometime in late 2022.

The Blue Beetle

DC FanDome 2021 included an update on the upcoming Blue Beetle movie, which focuses on Jaime Reyes’ version of the character. The brief segment featured director Angel Manuel Soto, screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer and actor Xolo Maridueña, who will play Jaime Reyes.

The trio promised that the film would stay true to the Latin American roots of the original comics and that the film would be fun and humorous but also emotionally involving and action-packed.

No video footage was available, but the segment showed the concept art of Jaime’s Blue Beetle armor.

League of SuperPets

DC League of SuperPets is still set to be the first original DC Comics animated film to be released in theaters. It is a family-friendly adventure film that tells us a story about Ace the Bat-Hound (Kevin Hart) and Krypto the Super-Dog (Dwayne Johnson).

It will also feature the voices of Natasha Lyonne, John Krasinski, Vanessa Bayer, Kate McKinnon, Diego Luna, and the ‘breathtaking one’ – Keanu Reeves. The film will appear in theaters and streaming platforms on May 20, 2022.

Milestone Media’s Untitled Animated Film

The plans and future projects of Milestone Media are not over, as they are also working on an animated film based at Dakotaverse. The script is being written by Season One writer Brandon Thomas and will feature the full line-up of Milestone heroes, including Hardware, Rocket, Icon, and Static.

The animation will be overseen by Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, and the film will be set entirely in Dakota.

Injustice Animated Movie

The Injustice Animated project’s release date schedule was set for October 19, 2021, just a few days after DC FanDome 2021. Still, there was an exclusive clip shown at the event.

Set in a world where the Joker triggered an emotional breakdown in Superman that led the incorruptible champion to become a fascist dictator in his attempt to ensure that no one would ever suffer at the hands of a supervillain again.

Injustice Setting has become one of DC Comics’ most popular alternative universes, spawning two video games and several best-selling comic book series. The short clip focuses on the search for the Joker and the tragic moment that leads to Superman’s collapse.

Other DC Comics Animated Films

After Injustice, the next DC animated film to be released will be Catwoman: Hunted, scheduled for release on February 08, 2022. The trailer reveals that the story will focus on Catwoman caught between Kate Kane’s Batwoman, a powerful crime syndicate, and Interpol, as she attempts to steal a priceless jewel.

There will be four other animated feature films released throughout 2022 and a new DC Showcase collection of animated shorts. Constantine fans will be pleased to know that one of the Showcase shorts is called Constantine: The House of Mystery and will feature Matt Ryan’s return to the role.

The other films announced at DC FanDome will include a crossover between the Doom Patrol and Teen Titans Go!, a Green Lantern movie titled Green Lantern: Beware My Power, and a film centered on Jon Kent (Superboy) and Damian Wayne (Robin) called “Battle of the Super Sons.”
