Kodi is free-of-cost open-source home theatre software. It is developed considering the needs of users who want all-in-one home entertainment software. At its core, Kodi is a media center – available on every major operating system – that allows people to stream media.

Google trackers are lurking on 75% of websites. Cover your tracks to protect yourself.

The story of Kodi started almost 2 decades ago. Microsoft originally created software for the original Xbox and called it XBMC (Xbox Media Center). After it was dropped by the tech giant, XMBC continued to evolve. The non-Microsoft team behind the software successfully popularized and built a community of their own. XMBC was later renamed Kodi.

Today, Kodi continues to evolve due to the continuous efforts of countless developers around the world as its open-source software. You can install new add-ons and add new builds to customize according to your preference. And the best thing is, it’s all free. Kodi is managed by the non-profit XMBC foundation.

Benefits of Kodi

The biggest benefit of Kodi is customization. You can install builds and customize the overall look & feel of the software according to your liking. Besides, you can also add multiple add-ons to stream whatever you want. And that’s not all.

Kodi isn’t just for computers. It is compatible with every gadget in your house that you use to stream online content. From your smartphone to iPad and FireStick, Kodi has an app for all major streaming platforms. Dedicated Kodi boxes such as NVIDIA Shield, Pendoo ®, and Android TV Boxes even come with Kodi, and its various add-ons pre-installed. Others like amazon’s Fire lineup of devices (including Firestick) require sideloading.

Kodi is a media center and media manager at the same time. You can listen to music, read books, watch videos, watch movies & TV shows, get movie reviews from authentic sources, stay up to date on the latest news, get sports updates, watch national & international news, and much more.  That’s just the tip of the iceberg. Really!

However, anything you watch on Kodi is visible to your ISP, government, and potential hackers. This can get you in trouble, especially if you are streaming illegally obtained content. To stay on the safe side, use a reliable VPN service like IPVanish. Using a VPN also unlocks geo-blocked Kodi add-ons.

What Can Kodi Do?

Kodi turns every gadget into a streamer. So, you can stream media directly from the internet, your home network, or local storage if you want. No restrictions. Unlike other streamers, Kodi isn’t restricted by licensing or a particular app store. You can download any third-party add-on, and stream whatever you like.

Notice: Hackers create fake WiFi hotspots to steal your passwords when you log in to public WiFi. Secure your data.

Its intuitive and user-friendly interface makes navigation a breeze. Its UI has been dubbed a 10-foot UI, meaning it’s so readable that anyone standing at a distance of 10 feet can interpret its content without any problem. All the content is nicely categorized. There’s even a full search functionality for the convenience of users.

Kodi offers a similar experience on all devices. You can install it on your smartphone and watch HD movies or just hook it up to a larger TV for big-screen viewing. You can even record live events, change skins, and pair remote controls to get an all-in-one home entertainment experience.

Is Kodi Legal?

Kodi is legal as long as you are running official apps. It is just like the third-party torrent websites and resources. Unless you are running third-party apps, you are fine. Similarly, Kodi apps aren’t illegal either. However, what you do with them can be legal or illegal, depending on your geography.

For instance, you can download and use any official Kodi add-on such as ESPN, Netflix, or Youtube without any problem. But using unofficial apps can be problematic. This is because most first-world countries consider streaming content without the copyright owner’s permission illegal. If you are using these Kodi add-ons to watch illegally obtained content, then it becomes unlawful. Depending on your local laws, you can get a fine or even face a jail term.

Then there are illicit streaming boxes. Many people temper with hardware or software via rooting and several other techniques. The purpose of tempering is to access any unpaid or unapproved content. Therefore, if you are using any of these devices – whether in-home or at a friend’s place – you can get in trouble.

So, the bottom line is, as long as you are watching legally obtained content via official add-ons, you are fine.

What Can You Watch on Kodi?

With Kodi, you can watch everything and anything you want. It puts you in charge. Besides already-included apps, you can get third-party add-ons that allow a plethora of resources and content to stream directly on your device.

From the latest blockbuster movies to fan-favorite TV series, live sports broadcasts, classic documentaries, social media content, the latest local and international news, and much more, Kodi has it all.

Take note that Kodi is just a media player. It does not host content on its servers. With the growing number of Kodi add-ons, you never run out of content to watch. But keep the consequences of watching illegally obtained content.

If you have paid subscriptions from services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, using their official apps to watch content is legal. However, using tempered versions of their apps that offer free content is illegal, and you are liable for your actions.

Can Kodi Replace Cable?

As we mentioned in the previous section, Kodi does not host any content on its servers. Everything comes from secondary sources. So technically, the answer is a big NO. It cannot replace your cable service. But, there’s a catch, and we will explain why getting Kodi instead is better.

Kodi houses all of your favorite streaming services on a single platform. That means it makes searching for shows and movies much easier. Streaming services are limited by their licensing agreements. So, when Kodi brings all of them together, you don’t have to look through multiple sources to look for particular content.

What is Compatible with Kodi?

Kodi is compatible with nearly every streaming device and OS you can think of. It works natively with Linux, Windows, Android, OS X, and even the Raspberry Pi series of minicomputers. So if your device is running on any of these OS, you can get started right away.

Getting Kodi on iDevices can be a bit of a hassle, though. This is because the Kodi apk doesn’t exist in the official app store. You have to get the official Kodi update titled Kodi v18.9 “Leia” for iOS devices. But it requires a jailbroken iDevice and iOS 8 or higher.

How to Install Kodi

If you want to install Kodi or want to update your existing version, this is exactly what you’re looking for. I’ll help you take all the headache out of installing Kodi on your Firestick by showing you the latest versions available and taking you every step of the way through the installation or update process. Every great journey begins with a single step.

How to Install Kodi 19 On Firestick & Fire TV

The latest version of Kodi is called Kodi 19 Matrix. It’s a predecessor of the Leia series and marginally better. It comes with many new options, features, and bug fixes. It has been in development for the last two years and brings big changes to how we consume entertainment.

While we are still a few months away to get the official Kodi 19 Matrix, it’s important that you know how to install it on your Firestick.

Now, there are basically two methods to get Kodi on Firestick. You can get it either through the free Downloader app or with the help of ES file explore. ES file explorer has gone premium now. So you have to shell out an extra $9.99 to work with this method. Let’s take a look at both methods.

1. The Downloader Method

Step 1: Launch your Firestick.

Step 2. On your homepage, head over to the Settings option

Step 3: Look for the My Device or My Fire TV option, click on it.

What Is A Kodi Repository?

Think of Kodi Repository as a bouquet that contains multiple flowers. A repository or repo, in short, is a container for multiple Kodi add-ons split into different categories. While you can install each of these apps separately, installing a repository is less effort and time-consuming. You can install a single Kodi repository of a particular category and get all the add-ons at once.

Kodi uses repositories to distribute add-ons, scripts, and services. All of these make Kodi run better, improve performance, change the appearance of the UI, etc. A repo is installed using a ZIP file, but the file contains mere “pointers” to the actual location of the repository. Developers use and maintain repos to store and locate all of their work. You can set Kodi to automatically check and install new versions of the repository once a project has been updated.

What Is A Kodi Skin?

A Kodi Skin is the way Kodi appears to our eyes. As previously mentioned, you can actually change the skins and customize the appearance, look and feel of the User Interface according to your liking. As a result, these skins provide an absolute makeover of the entire interface.

There are thousands of Kodi skins available online that you can install on your devices without charging you anything. To access various skins, go to the Kodi Add-on Repository. There you can see all the popular skins available. These skins allow you to modify all the menus, change images, change shortcuts and change icons in an easy and quick way.

This means you can get a pretty impressive and cool-looking user interface tailored to your likes and dislikes. Unfortunately, these Kodi skins aren’t included in the official Kodi repository. This means you have to download and install them on your device from online sources, just like Kodi add-ons.

What Is A Kodi Build?

A Kodi builds in simple words is a pre-canned Kodi setup that includes different add-ons, themes, graphics, settings, and other information. As soon as you install a build, it sets up everything from add-ons and themes to graphics, skins, electronic program guides, and various other settings, all at once.

A build also comes with various Kodi repos, so you can save your precious time versus installing everything and making changes manually yourself. Thus, installing a new Kodi build gives a full makeover to your default Kodi app in a single click.

Normally, when you install Kodi on your device, you have to take some time to customize it according to your liking. You need to search the internet for various add-ons, different skins, and other settings that may suit your intended purpose of using Kodi in the first place.

Utilizing a Kodi build is the fastest and easiest method to get Kodi up and running in minimum time and with minimum effort. You can then get tv shows, the latest movies, documentaries, and other streaming items that you may need in a single location without going through the hassle of individually installing each add-on and making changes as you go.

What Is A Kodi Add-on?

Think of Kodi add-ons as base applications that increase the functionality and performance of the main Kodi app. There are literally hundreds of thousand add-ons available online that you can connect to Kodi. Add-ons turn this just another media center into one of the best online streaming platforms available today.

While Kodi does include add-ons through its official repo, you can also get them through various locations on the internet. There are entire websites dedicated to the latest add-ons. We have also compiled a list of the best Kodi add-ons, which you can access here.

Most commonly used Kodi add-ons grant you easy access to television shows, films, live tv streams of sporting events, and much more. These add-ons are curated to explore the interwebs for all and any media content. Besides, Kodi add-ons also assist with audio or video streams within your main Kodi application.

Normally, these add-ons come in a .zip file format. You can connect them effortlessly with the main app through the add-on section located under the settings tab inside Kodi. Today, Kodi add-ons are constantly developing, upgrading, and modernizing to give you the best streaming experience. Therefore, be sure to also explore the internet for any special add-ons.

Access Your Video Addons

Accessing the Video add-ons is also fairly simple. On your Kodi home screen, navigate to the Add-ons menu. Its located on the left-hand side of the screen along with TV, Radio, Pictures, and other options. Once you get into the Add-ons menu, Kodi will open the add-on browser. This is where all of your add-ons are organized.

The main browser shows different sections. You can browse through all the previously installed apps in the My add-ons section, look for the latest available updates, recently updated ones, get an app from the repository or install it directly from a zip file. There’s also video add-ons and music add-ons section here. You can find respective add-ons in each section.

Install Any Add-on on Kodi

Previously, finding and installing Kodi add-ons used to be quite a hassle. You had to go through multiple steps to install add-ons on your main app. While the process is still not as straightforward as we would have liked, the latest Kodi version improves things a little. Now you can get started via the add-on section.

In this section, you can see all the installed add-ons broken down into different sections like Video, Music, Programs, etc. The simplest way to install an add-on to select the “Install from repository” section, as you can see in the image. Next, tap on the Kodi Add-on repository” option to start sorting through them by category.

Now, the list of categories can be a bit overwhelming to the newcomer. Therefore, we suggest heading over to the Video add-ons section to begin your Kodi experience.

Scroll down until you come across something that interests you. In case you have no idea where to start, we suggest our go-to entertainment zone Youtube.

Select the Youtube add-on and hit that Enter button. In the following screen, install Youtube. The add-on installs in the background, and you will notice a popup notification informing when it is complete. This way, you can find your new add-ons back on the main Kodi screen.

Go and repeat this process for as many add-ons as you want. There’s pretty impressive stuff in the default Kodi repository to enhance your Kodi experience.

You can also configure Add-ons if you like. Some add-ons like Pandora require you to log in before you can make any changes. Others are configurable right from their settings. Here’s how you can do it:

On the main add-ons section, click on the particular add-on you wish to configure and then hit the S button on your keypad. It will open the settings menu in a popup window.

Select the settings option, and a new window showing all the settings for that particular add-on will open. You can change settings as per your preferences.

Remember, these settings will differ for each add-on. If you think a particular setting of an add-on can be changed, be sure to check its settings because you can probably change it in the settings. That’s how configurable Kodi add-ons can be.

That’s not all. You can get even more add-ons from various third-party repositories. To get these repositories, first, you have to enable the third-party repositories. On your main Kodi homepage, go to the Settings by hitting that gear icon. Then head over to the System > Add-ons section. Here, make sure the “Unknown Sources” toggle is turned on.

Next, get the .ZIP file for the repository you want to install. Make sure it’s on the same device as your Kodi app. Now, head over to the Add-ons section. Locate the box icon on the top left side of the screen.

This is the add-on browser section. In this section, you can install Zip files, browser through already added ones, or install from repository along. There’s also a Search option here to help you look up any add-on quickly and with convenience.

What Is A Kodi Wizard?

A Kodi Wizard is a combo of multiple builds. You can install a wizard with a single click, which automatically installs all the builds, saving you time, energy and efforts. Most of the time, a Kodi Wizard includes some magical tools that can help improve your overall Kodi experience. These include buffering test tool, speed test tool, installing android (apk) apps, etc.

In simple words, a Kodi wizard is a combination of all the add-ons, skins, repositories, and builds. Being a very handy tool, a wizard is the future of Kodi as we believe users will fall in love with this feature.

What Is A Kodi EPG?

Just like your Cable or dish service has a program guide, Kodi has its own Electronic Program Guide (or EPG in simple). The Kodi EPG works with all of your Live TV add-ons, and combines all the information in one place. You can then see what is currently playing on your apps.

What’s more, you can then start the stream right away from its fully optimized and friendly user interface. There are several Kodi EPG add-ons available online. But, none of them work independently. They depend on the Live TV ads that you have already installed on your Kodi.

What Else can Kodi Do?

A LOT. Let’s take a look.

Download and Stream Music

Kodi allows you to download and stream your favorite latest or classic music. Simply get a suitable Kodi add-on and start playing. You can also store music, add to favorites, curate playlists, and much more. The best thing about Kodi is that it doesn’t just work with a single .mp3 format. In fact, it can play music in other formats too, such as AAC and OGG. In a way, using Kodi to stream music is just like using Spotify or iTunes without costing you a dime in the subscription cost. It’s all free. You can also listen to online podcasts with the right add-ons.

Upload Pictures and Videos, View Social Media Platforms

Another cool feature of Kodi is the ability to store and see pictures and videos from your library. There are several photo add-ons available on the internet that let you edit pictures, create slideshows, make albums and do much more. You can even use your photos to create different Kodi skins to use on any of your Kodi-supported devices. Cool, right?

Social media, weather, and other productivity apps are other great services. You can use Kodi to download all of these add-ons to have an all-in-one experience.

Download, Install and Play Video Games

If you like video games, you can use Kodi to access tons of games in different formats. From Android video games to retro and some Kodi-specific ones, you can download all of them on your Kodi device and have some fun. There is no dearth of video gaming Kodi add-ons on the internet.

However, Kodi is no PS4. So, don’t try to play the latest Cyberpunk 2077 or Red Dead redemption with Kodi. In addition, some of these games may require you to download an emulator such as DOSBox. Kodi uses these emulators to properly run supported games.

Organize files and content

Kodi isn’t just a media player; it’s a media organizer as well and one of the best ones available today. It helps you organize a growing list of collections. You can then keep track of what did you leave in the middle of streaming and resume from where you left off. You can also create new categories to organize your content on the basis of genre, date, priority, or anything else that you like. Add-ons such as Trakt.tv let you sync your favorite TV series and movies across multiple devices so that you are always up to date with the latest content.

How to Use Kodi

Kodi packs a convenient user-friendly interface. This makes it very easy to install any add-ons, play content and personalize the look & feel of the app. As you can see in the image below, the top portion of the Kodi home screen features  Search, Settings, and Power icons.
