IPVanish Mac with Killswitch: How to Protect Your Downloads

Here is how to install IPVanish Mac app on any Macbook, Mac desktop computer, or Mac mini.  My internet privacy is extremely important for me, so it should be important for you too.

IMPORTANT:  Make sure to enable the Killswitch, which I show you how to do in the video below.

This process is pretty simple: I show you how to install IPVanish on any Mac computer, whether it’s a Macbook, a Mac mini, Macbook Pro (“MBP”), or even a Mac tower computer (“PC”).

In the video below, I show you how to protect all of your online information by installing a VPN on your Mac.  Then directly below the video, I provide the written step-by-step tutorial.

And by the way, this whole process works also on Windows computers. Why?  Because every app that I show you in this video series is a cross-platform app. Also, if you watch the next video in this series (where I show you how to install qbittorrent to download torrents), then you will see the double Killswitch method that I use personally everyday.  I consider it really important, so I show you that in the next video.

This video is the first part of a multi-part series of videos.  And in this multi-part video series, I show you how to set up your Mac so that it becomes a media server.  What I mean by that is that we’re going to set up your Mac to be a free, super-HD media server.  This Mac media server can anonymously and automatically download any media content that you want, whether it’s HD movies like blu-rays or anything else. This media server is able to stream all of that content to any device on your network (we use Plex Media Server for that).

So anyway, this Youtube tutorial video (at the top of this page) is more than just one video.  It’s part of several more videos that are going to show you an overall bigger picture.

Let’s go ahead and set up IPVanish on your Mac.  This way, you can download anything you want anonymously and privately.

  9. Click on that downloaded file to launch that download file
  10. Now we just drag the IPVanish icon over to the Applications folder
  11. Now double click on Applications
  12. Go down to “IPVanish VPN” under Applications and double-click “IPVanish VPN” to launch IPVanish for Mac
  13. Click on “Open”

You can see that the IPVanish Mac app says “Updating servers”.

Now continue to the next section to enable the IPVanish KIllswitch.

How to Set Up IPVanish Mac Killswitch

Here’s one thing that I wanted to show you:  there’s a particular setting in the IPVanish app which enables the VPN Kill Switch.  So let’s go ahead and check out that kill switch.

In the IPVanish App, follow these steps to turn on the Killswitch:

  1. Go up to the top left corner of the screen where the top menu is (next to the Apple icon) and click on “IPVanish VPN
  2. Click on “Preferences
  3. Under “OpenVPN options” make sure the “Kill switch” box is checked.  Also make sure the “scramble” box is checked.
  4. Click the red “x” to quit “Preferences”

OK!  So we have our Killswitch all set up.  Keep reading to see what the VPN Killswitch actually does.

What does VPN Killswitch do?

Basically what that’s going to do is shut off the internet connection to your Mac if the VPN connection is dropped.

The app turns off the Wi-Fi on your Mac so that your computer cannot send out any unsecured information.

While you’re connected to the VPN, everything you send out or receive is totally secure.

But if the VPN just loses the connection, then you don’t want your information to still be sent or received unsecured.

If you’re downloading a (public domain) movie or something like that, you don’t want people snooping on your connection!

So that’s why I enable to kill switch right here. This VPN Kill switch will shut off the Wi-Fi of my Mac if the VPN connection is dropped.

Connecting to IPVanish After Killswitch is Enabled

After you enable the Killswitch, close the “Preferences” window.

Then just hit “Connect

Wait for the VPN to connect.  You may need to press “Connect” a few times for the connection to actually complete.

After the Mac VPN app says “Connected” (and you can see in the top right corner of your Mac it says “IPVanish VPN connected”, the IPVanish Mac app immediately starts to show the upload and download of our internet connection.

Your data is now protected!  This means everything on your internet connection is sent out or received by this Mac is now totally secured, totally private, and totally anonymous.

Now you can download anything you want, visit any sites you want, and anything else.  And this is just part of the video series where I show you how to turn your Mac into a torrent downloader / Plex Media server!

So now that your IPVanish VPN is set up on your Mac, you are totally free to do anything you want online and be totally protected.

That’s why I suggest that you watch the next video in the series, where I show you how to set up QBitTorrent to download torrents so you can download movies, TV shows, and music.

The Radarr mac app has a nice clean interface so you don’t have to go to all these weird websites in a browser to download some movie torrents.
