So you have just installed the Firestick to stream the latest movies on your vacation, but the device isn’t working. It only shows a black screen and three alternating dots in the bottom right corner of the screen. Sometimes these dots of frustration appear as if from nowhere, and man can they ruin your day. Your device was working fine a minute ago. But now it has gone unresponsive. Categories aren’t showing anything. And you can’t even go to the Settings anymore. If this is happening to you, we very much regret to inform you that you’ve fallen victim to what is commonly known as the Firestick 3 dots problem.
In this article, we look at what the Firestick 3 dots issue means and give you some possible solutions to get your Firestick device back to working again.

What Do the Firestick 3 Dots Mean?
In simple words, the Firestick three dots error means your Firestick has gone kaput…. not really! It’s just a nap, don’t you worry. During this period the device gets unresponsive, which can be very annoying. You’re going to need to take a few steps to breathe a new life into its circuits. There could be more than one cause for this problem, so we’re going to give you a few different things to try out. These are the most common causes of the Firestick 3 dots error.
Try the following solutions in the same order as they are listed below. The order is important, because we’ve tried to give you the fastest and most likely solutions to the Firestick 3 dots problem early on. Before you’re through with the list, you’ll almost certainly find a solution to the Firestick 3 dots error.
1. Check WiFi Connection
If we had a dollar for every time this fixed a Firestick problem we’d retire off on a nice island somewhere and live comfortably for the rest of our days (don’t worry, you’re invited). Firestick needs an uninterrupted internet connection to keep working. So, ensure that your Firestick’s connection to the internet is working properly. - B, & G router types set on 2.4GHz
- N router on 5GHz
In addition, ensure the security code for your WiFi is entered correctly. Check the security type, as WPA-EAP and WPA2-EAP types are not supported for Firestick.
2. Move Firestick Closer to the Router
Move your Fire TV device closer to the WiFi router. It may be that the Firestick is trying to find the network and the WIFI signals are too weak in that corner of the house. Likewise, make sure there are no obstacles b between the two devices, and the signal communication path is free of interference. Any interference can also cause a bad connection between the two devices.
Try both of these solutions with or without the HDMI extender. Moving the Firestick closer in relation to your TV set improves the line of sight, which can help prevent interference and boost the signal strength, potentially solving the Firestick 3 dots error.
3. Check Proxy Settings
Are you using a proxy server? If that’s the case, you may have to contact the proxy service provider for help. In many cases, the service providers ask you to rest all the proxies. Follow their instructions to ensure the problem isn’t with the proxies.
As an alternate option, tether the Fire TV Stick to your phone and restart it. You should then be able to see at least some of the apps that you couldn’t earlier. Then change the network back to your home internet and see if it removes the Firestick 3 dots error. This is an unconventional solution and may not always work.

4. Turn Firestick On/Off
Unfortunately, Firestick has limited memory. The 8 GB storage fills up rather quickly. It leads to your device becoming slow or unresponsive entirely. Resetting Firestick will flush the memory and allow you to start fresh. You can turn it off from your home settings, remote control, or simply turn off the power.
To turn it off from your home settings:
- Highlight the Home tab on your Home screen
- Scroll to the right-hand side
- Next click on Settings
- Click on My Fire TV
- Scroll down
- Then click on the Restart option to automatically restart your device.
To do the same using your remote control, press and hold the Play/Pause and Select buttons simultaneously for 10 seconds. The device should restart when you do this. You can also unplug the device from your TV to turn it off and then wait for a while (10 seconds) before turning it on again. 5. Registered Devices
Some TV sets have a limited option for registered devices. You cannot connect more than a few devices simultaneously. 6. Unpause Firestick on Your WiFi Devices
Sometimes we unintentionally pause some WiFi devices while playing around settings. Therefore, make sure you haven’t paused the Firestick through your cable device section. If nothing else is working, checking these settings is worth a shot. Firestick 3 dots is a tricky error and occasionally we’ve found that this little problem is the culprit.
7. Reset to factory settings
Usually, resetting to factory settings fixes the problem. But it should only be attempted as a last resort. A factory reset erases all downloaded content and personalized settings from your device, including the in-app purchases or any other changes you may have made over the months. It’s a pain, for sure, but it’s better than a broken Firestick 3 dots problem! So if you’ve made it this far, let’s give it a shot.
Therefore if you need to do this, save any important files, remove any expandable storage, and note down your personalized settings before attempting this solution. The easiest way to factory reset is by using your Fire TV remote control. Press and hold the right side of the navigation circle along with the Back button for at least 10 seconds. On the TV screen, a prompt will pop up asking for the confirmation. Click on continue to start the factory reset process. - Click on the reset option and confirm your selection in the next prompt.
This will reboot your Fire TV Stick, and you should see a screen with the message Resetting Your Fire TV Stick. After your Firestick has finished rebooting, test it out to see if you’re still getting the Firestick 3 dots error. With any luck you should be all in the clear by this point.
