Direct TV Stream App Cost & Payment Plans

DirecTV Stream Devices

DirecTV Stream offers four packages priced according to the number and types of channels that come with each.

All have unlimited cloud DVR and simultaneous streams within your home (three streams on the go). The Direct TV Stream App subscription plans are:

  1. The entry-level starter plan, Entertainment, is $74.99 per month. It has 75 channels.
  2. The Choice plan is $99.99 monthly and offers 105 channels. These include regional sports networks, NBA TV, MLB, and college sports.
  3. The Ultimate package costs $109.99 monthly and has 140 channels. These include Golf Channel and NHL Network.
  4. The highest level plan is Premier, priced at $154.99 per month. It bundles in HBO Max, Showtime, Starz, and Cinemax.

DirecTV Stream’s Entertainment plan is comparable in price to other major cable alternatives that offer all the broadcast and cable channels. Fubo and Hulu With Live TV are in the same price range, while YouTube TV is slightly cheaper. Sling and Philo are less expensive, but they offer fewer channels.

While the higher-tier plans may seem expensive, the additional channels justify the cost.

Overall the Premier plan is a complete cable replacement with other premium networks.

Direct TV Stream App Channels, Live TV, and On-Demand Shows

DirecTV Now Interface

We subscribed to an entry-level Entertainment package for this review. It includes over 75 channels, which is slightly fewer than its competitors.

Despite having a smaller lineup, DirecTV Stream’s channel selection is impressive. It includes all four broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox) and PBS, which is not offered by any other live TV service. Additionally, it includes all major cable channels like AMC, CNN, Comedy Central, ESPN, Food Network, MTV, TBS, FX, HGTV, TLC, TNT, and USA Network

As for Direct TV Stream App on-demand content; the Entertainment Package includes 40,000 titles to choose from.

Moreover, DirecTV Stream provides a three-month free trial of premium networks like HBO and Showtime. They also offer sports and international extras. But to access specialty sports networks, you need to upgrade to a larger package.

DirecTV Stream also provides movies and TV shows on-demand. You can fast-forward and rewind as much as you like. Not just that, DirecTV Stream also allows you to sample the first episodes of premium network shows like Showtime’s Yellowjackets, HBO’s Euphoria, and Starz’s Outlander.

Direct TV Stream App User Experience: User Interface and Navigation

Direct TV Stream App User Experience

The user interface is sleek and modern. The thumbnails are large and colorful, making it easy to browse and select what to watch. Launching the app opens the Watch Now tab, which shows what’s currently playing. Unfortunately, you can’t change this default setting.

Other tabs include Guide, My Library, Sports, and On Demand. On the phone, Watch Now and Guide are combined.

The Watch Now tab displays live TV and other shows airing at that moment, along with a “Continue Watching” section for recordings and on-demand episodes you haven’t finished. The thumbnails include a progress bar to help you keep track of your viewing progress.

The Guide is a grid of channels that you can sort by channel number or A-Z. You can filter by favorites, movies, TV shows, sports, and kids. Like Watch Now, the Guide plays the channel currently on, which can be distracting while browsing.

My library is where you can access your DVR recordings and bookmarks for favorite shows and movies. The Sports tab is similar to Watch Now but filters for sports content, while On Demand showcases the available movies, shows, and networks in the DirecTV Stream library.

The menu bar at the bottom of the app contains search and settings. You can update preferences, parental controls, the next episode autoplay, and streaming quality in the settings. One minor annoyance is that the app always starts playing the last channel you used rather than staying on a non-active home screen like Sling.

Overall, DirecTV Stream’s interface is easy to navigate and use. It’s intuitive, and everything is labeled and behaves as expected.

Video Streaming and DVR

Parental Controls on Direct TV Stream App

The DirecTV Stream’s web player has a sleek look and includes all the standard playback options. In addition to the typical controls, you have access to a 15-second rewind and fast-forward feature (on select channels), a DVR record button, a Restart button (on select channels), basic channel information, arrows to navigate to the next (or previous) live channel in your lineup, and CC options.

It supports up to 20 simultaneous streams per account on the same home network, with up to three away from it. YouTube TV allows three concurrent streams by default, but an add-on enables streaming on an unlimited number of devices on the home network.

FuboTV and Hulu + Live TV permit three and two simultaneous streams by default, respectively. But both have add-ons that increase those limits.

While we could not verify the precise resolution of DirecTV Stream’s HD channels, all three options (Best, Better, or Good) appear to be less than 1080p. The framerate remained at 30fps on the devices we tested.

So, FuboTV remains the only live TV streaming service that supports 4K streaming without any add-ons.

The DVR storage feature of DirecTV Stream is now more comparable to those of its competitors. With unlimited storage, the service allows users to record up to 30 episodes and keep those recordings for up to nine months. It’s very similar to YouTube TV’s DVR policy. Others have limited DVR.

Lookback & Restart

Two notable streaming features by DirecTV Stream are Lookback and Restart. With Lookback, you can watch select programming from up to three days in the past. This feature would particularly benefit sports fans who miss a game from the previous day or so. However, only a few sports channels support it.

On the other hand, the Restart feature allows users to start playing back a live program from the beginning. Many more channels, including A&E, Bloomberg, CNN, Food Network, FOX Sports, Travel Channel, and UniMas, appear to support this feature, although it depends on the individual program.

One downside is that once a user restarts a program, it cannot be recorded from the beginning.

Parental Controls on Direct TV Stream App

Direct TV Stream App Channels, Live TV, and On-Demand Shows

Among the various live TV streaming services, DirecTV Stream stands out for offering parental control features. These allow you to block movies and TV shows by rating and restrict access to content that does not have a rating, all from the Settings section. These restrictions apply to both live and on-demand content.

However, similar to Sling TV, the effectiveness of this feature is limited as the restrictions cannot be linked to individual profiles. Different household members may have varying viewing restrictions, which means it could be cumbersome to enter a four-digit PIN each time you want to change channels or watch a movie.

Direct TV Stream App Compatibility

DirecTV Stream Supported Devices

Pros and Cons of the Direct TV Stream App

DirecTV Stream for Android TV

When it comes to the pros of the Direct TV Stream app, the app’s broad selection of channels and content is a significant advantage. With over 160 live TV channels and a vast selection of on-demand programming, there’s no shortage of things to watch.

Additionally, the app offers access to premium channels like HBO and Showtime, as well as add-ons like NFL Sunday Ticket and international programming options. Another benefit of the Direct TV Stream app is its easy-to-use interface, which is designed to be user-friendly and intuitive.

The app also offers cloud DVR storage for recording shows and movies, as well as the ability to watch content on up to 20 different devices.

On the other hand, there are also some potential downsides to using the Direct TV Stream app. One of the most significant drawbacks is the cost. While the app does offer a variety of features and content, the pricing can be quite expensive, especially compared to other streaming services.

Additionally, some users have reported issues with buffering and streaming quality, which can be frustrating when trying to watch a show or movie. Another potential downside is the limited availability of the app.

Currently, Direct TV Stream is only available in select areas, so not everyone will be able to use the app.

Overall, there are both pros and cons to using the Direct TV Stream app.

By understanding the benefits and drawbacks of the app, you can make an informed decision about whether it’s the right choice for you.

  • Reliable streaming performance
  • Customization options for channels
  • Allows up to 20 devices simultaneously on the home network
  • RSNs from Comcast, Cinsclair, and AT&T
  • Parental controls

  • Expensive

Conclusion: Is It Worth Your Investment?

The DirecTV Stream is the only service to offer RSNs from all three major providers. Its friendly interface, good performance, and helpful features make it a viable cord-cutting option.

However, compared to its competitors like Sling and Youtube TV, its plans are more expensive, even with its better DVR capabilities.

We’d only recommend it over other streaming services if you watch a lot of regional sports.
